Sioux Empire Fair celebrates 70 years
New vendors, fresh paint, cleaned out buildings and crushed concrete are just some of the improvements that have taken place at the W.H. Lyon Fairgrounds in time for the 70th Annual Sioux Empire Fair, to be held Aug. 11-16.

These tangible changes can't measure the amount of support the Sioux Empire Fair Association has received in the last few months, said Tryg Fredrickson. In 2009, a Fair Association employee was charged with embezzlement and audits showed that nearly $648,000 was stolen over seven years.

After fulfilling the initial commitment he made to the board, he remains in the position because it was too late to do a search for a new executive and still put on the Sioux Empire Fair. "Having the most successful fair is all I think about," he said. "If the interest and donations are any indication of what type of fair we'll have, it's going to be the best. People are coming out of the woodwork to help." ...Read Full Story

Creating and funding needed community infrastructure was one of the major areas of focus at last year's session. Because we have much to be grateful for, it is our turn to provide leadership for future infrastructure projects. A prime example is the continuing debate over the proposed Sioux Falls Event Center. ...Read Full Story
