Throughout the years, the family has increased employment opportunities for family members and non-family members. In 2009, with the assistance of Dakota BUSINESS Finance, land was purchased and a new 27,000-plus sq.ft. facility was constructed in Sioux Falls. With this expansion, 11 full-time employees were added.

The 2014 Young Entrepreneur of the Year award was given to Paul Ten Haken, Click Rain. Click Rain, which was started in 2008 by Ten Haken, provides online marketing and web development services to large international companies, local businesses — and everything in between. The company has grown from one-person to a staff of 20-plus designers, online marketers, developers and account staff.

Click Rain has achieved this incredible growth while maintaining a culture of work-life balance, quality products and services, and a fun atmosphere. Ten Haken hasn't been far from the spotlight in the past six years, often called by the local media to share insight on digital and current events. Google, the BBC, Tumir, Entrepreneur Magazine and the Sioux Falls Business Journal has also recognized Ten Haken and Click Rain for work in the digital marketing industry. In 2013, Ten Haken was selected as a member of the Google Glass Explorers Program and shares this technology with others whenever he can.
Selected as the 2014 Financial Services Advocate of the Year, Mark Slade has been with the South Dakota Small Business Development Center since early 1998, serving as both the Sioux Falls Regional Director and the Associate State Director. Applying his background in small business and finance to the benefit of South Dakota's entrepreneurs, Slade works with approximately 200 start-ups and existing businesses per year in fields from retail and service to manufacturing and professional/technical services.

Successful client projects have ranged in size from individual proprietorships to $12 million projects and 100-plus job expansions. The economic impact of the projects he has seen successfully launched since 1998 topped nearly $250 billion. Slade holds an MBA from the University of South Dakota along with an Economic Development Finance Professional Certification (EDFP).

Also recognized at the Small Business Week Celebration was Anne Hullinger, Internal Revenue Services, Sioux Falls as the 2014 Small Business Advocate of the Year. A Federal employee for 30 years, Hullinger has served with the General Services Administration and Social Security Administration in Illinois, Montana and South Dakota. She has held her current position, IRS Stakeholder Liaison for South Dakota, Montana and Iowa, for the past 12 years.

In this capacity, Hullinger works with both tax preparers and organizations that assist small businesses, such as the Small Business Development Center, SCORE and Chambers of Commerce. She shares tax information and updates with her partners, and works to solve issues involving IRS systems, policies and procedures. Hullinger has also instructed classes for 24 years and recently wrote an IRS webinar on depreciation basics for small businesses.
