How can you thank someone for giving 37 years of their life to a city?

In Evan Nolte´s case, you begin with well deserved accolades from friends, colleagues and civic leaders - the folks many of us heard from in the wonderfully crafted video tribute featured at the Annual Meeting of the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce. I saw many of you there - so thank you for supporting the Chamber at what was a terrific evening.

Add countless personal notes of appreciation many of us have been - and will be - passing on since Evan, the Chamber´s longtime president and CEO, announced his retirement. I know many of you already have taken the opportunity to express your gratitude for a job well done.

Then mix in a community event that will lift up Evan and his amazing contributions in such a way that will place a bow on a memorable chapter in our city´s history. Look for details on that celebration in the weeks ahead. That´s all part of how we are leading the Chamber´s salute to Evan.

But there´s one more way that is even more important: Find someone who will continue the remarkable work Evan has done to shape this city through its business leadership. A successful Chamber president builds relationships, thinks strategically and works collaboratively while keeping an eye on the far horizon. That´s what Evan has done, and that´s what our next leader will do.

While we will miss Evan and his unique brand of leadership, we are hard at work identifying the person who will fill that vitally important role in the years to come.

You could say that Evan joined the Chamber at a pivotal time in our city´s history. Eighty thousand people called Sioux Falls home. In large part, nobody lived south of 57th Street. Look at us today. In 37 years, our population has doubled and growth - in all directions, in all ways - continues to transform Sioux Falls into an increasingly vibrant city.

Evan has led our Chamber - and city - through an era of great change and development. It was a big job, and he did it well. While finding a replacement is a daunting task, our selection committee is working hard. Here´s what we know: The success of the past is no guarantee of success in the future, and we are committed to selecting a leader who is up to the many challenges of our rapidly changing city and economy.

So, hat´s off to Evan for an extraordinary career! Let´s send him into retirement in style.

Together, then, we will face the future. With your support, and new, committed leadership, the future is bright indeed.
