Shop small on Small Business Saturday

By Lauren Fosheim
Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce

The first Small Business Saturday took place in 2010. The mission was simple – Small Business Saturday encouraged people across the country to support small, local businesses during the holiday shopping season. In 2011, the United States Senate officially passed a resolution of support for Small Business Saturday. Small Business Saturday falls on the Saturday following Thanksgiving, and this year will be celebrated on November 26.

Small businesses make up 62% (around 1,500 members) of the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce´s total membership of 2,200 members. We define Small Businesses as those organizations with ten or fewer employees, and the efforts of groups like the Chamber´s Small Business Council rally around serving those members.

Utilize Social Media

It may take a little time to get started, but utilizing social media platforms (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest) are great ways to help new potential customers find your business, and to keep current customers engaged. Social media helps you to tell your story, and puts a personal touch on who you are and what you´re about. People are in search of great products and services, but they also care about who they support. Images and posts you share on social media allow customers to become familiar with your company and your story; it allows them the opportunity to build a relationship with you. This form of promotion lends itself well not only to retailers, but to any form of business with a product or service to sell.

Attracting Customers

Buy-one-get-one free sales, sidewalk sales and other "Small Business Saturday" promotions are a great way to pique curiousity and to encourage people to shop at your business. According to, nationwide in 2015, 95 million people shopped at small businesses on Small Business Saturday, and in 2014, an estimated $14.3 billion was spent.
