Chamber supports moving events center process forward
The Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors unanimously approved at their May 25 meeting a recommendation developed through an extensive process by the Chamber’s Issues Management Council. The recommendation supports Sioux Falls City Council approval of plans to finance and construct an events center for the Sioux Falls community and region.

The approved statement is as follows: “The Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce recommends to the Sioux Falls City Council that the proposed events center facility be constructed based upon the City Council’s evaluation of the Administration’s events center planning process. The Chamber recommends that the City Council move forward with a site selection and approval of a suitable financial plan as soon as possible.”

To reach this decision, several Chamber committees first studied the issue. On May 12, 2011, a combined meeting was held with the Issues Management Council, the Tax Council and the Business Transportation Committee. Presenters were Darrin Smith, City Director of Community and Economic Development; Teri Ellis Schmidt, CVB Executive Director; and CVB Council and Business Improvement District Chair Kraig Pomrenke, Sioux Falls Convention Center. The speakers gave a comprehensive overview of the process and schedule related to the events center proposal and Mayor Mike Huether’s site recommendation, which was presented to the Sioux Falls City Council on May 9, 2011.

Subsequently, on May 18, 2011 the Tax Council and Business Transportation Committee met with City Finance Director Tracy Turbak, and Planning and Building Services Director Mike Cooper to obtain a better understanding of the financing alternatives for the events center project and the impacts it may have on the Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) in future years. Turbak discussed the initial financial plan being considered.

Following the presentations, the joint committees approved a recommendation that was then presented for the consideration of the Issues Management Council (IMC). On May 24, the IMC considered and approved a final recommendation to be submitted to the Executive Committee and Board of Directors on May 25. The IMC recommendation with Chamber Executive Committee approval was then considered and unanimoulsy approved by the Chamber’s Board of Directors at their May 25 meeting.

As more information regarding financing and location is shared, the IMC and Board of Directors will continue to review the issue and inform Chamber members.
